Rachel Charles
I wanted to set myself a personal challenge to improve my fitness levels after giving birth to my beautiful baby boy. I had been a keen runner and have taken part in a few events before and as this race was local to where I live I thought it was the perfect event to kickstart me back towards my fitness goals.
Training & Clothing
I’d not really done much exercise and have to admit I found it hard to get started and I even wondered why I signed up in the first place! After a few jogs a few miles it did start getting easier though – I ran around my local village so could just step out of my front door and start running. Once I was able to run a few miles I picked up the pace and then kept increasing my mileage and within a 10 week period I was able to run a full 6 miles.
Being a road race getting some comfortable running shoes was a must. I bought myself a new pair which I used during my training and for the event itself. I felt it was important to get a good pair as I plan to do more events like this in the future. I used my old running trousers but decided to treat myself to a new quick wicking and light-weight running top – a girl has to look stylish!
Let’s Stride!
When we arrived the parking was good, it was also free and on side streets surrounding the starting area. The organisation on the day was really good – nothing was sent out prior to the race, so numbers and time chips were collected on the day and were easy to locate.
The race start was easy to find and the whole course was very well marshalled. Communication at the start was really good and the marshals sited at regular intervals around the course were very friendly and provided great motivation.
The race was at full capacity – meaning there were over 750 runners taking part, which made for a great atmosphere. Overall the course was very well marked and followed little county roads, with a slight hill between 0km – 2km the rest of the race was relatively flat. After crossing the finishing line I received a Billericay 10k mug and a well-deserved Mars bar.
Final thoughts
I thought it was a great race and was really well organised. I would definitely recommend the race and plan to enter again next year!
